Grand Teton National Park’s elk reduction program is sparking the ire of some Jackson Hole residents who say the hunt is more about trophy bulls than it is about protecting park resources, as it was envisioned.
“It was supposed to be for emergency reduction when the elk population was out of hand,” Tom Mangelsen, a local nature photographer and wildlife advocate, said. If such were the case, managers would target cow elk only, he argued.
